# What to buy in Vietnam for your home, and what you save

Most lists of what to buy in Vietnam stop at lanterns, coffee and conical hats. This one is about the things you would otherwise order at home, often made to measure: curtains, blinds, a fitted sheet for a mattress no standard size fits, silk, and a suit or a shirt. Shops in Da Nang and Hoi An make them in days, and the price gap is widest where the work is mostly labour.

Whether it is worth it depends on the price and on how the piece gets home. So the list is sorted that way: what folds into a suitcase, what needs a checked bag, and what only travels as freight. Every item links to its own page with the shops, the dates and the sources.

## Fits in a suitcase

Curtains, sheets, covers and silk fold flat and weigh little. Bring the measurements: a shop sews to the numbers you give it, so measure the window or the mattress, including its depth, before you fly. A fitted sheet for a mattress with a topper, 180 by 210 cm and 50 cm deep, was the site maker's own order.

## Needs a checked bag

A roller blind or a wooden venetian blind comes with a headrail as wide as the window, so it needs a long bag or a sports baggage allowance. Lamp shades woven from bamboo or rattan nest inside each other. Ask the shop to wrap the headrail in cardboard.

## Only as freight

A vertical blind for a large window, or furniture made to order, does not fly as baggage. Shared container freight (LCL) is charged per cubic metre, plus a local charge and a fee per shipment, and takes about five weeks from Ho Chi Minh City to Rotterdam. It makes sense for a room full of things, not for one chair.

## Before you fly home

What you bring back counts toward a customs allowance. Arriving by air it is 430 euro per person in the Netherlands and Germany ([Dutch customs](https://www.belastingdienst.nl/wps/wcm/connect/nl/bagage/content/ik-reis-buiten-de-eu), [German customs](https://www.zoll.de/DE/Privatpersonen/Reisen/Rueckkehr-aus-einem-Nicht-EU-Staat/Zoll-und-Steuern/Reisefreimengen/reisefreimengen.html)), 390 pounds in Great Britain ([GOV.UK](https://www.gov.uk/bringing-goods-into-uk-personal-use/arriving-in-Great-Britain)), 800 dollars for a returning US resident ([CBP](https://www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/what-expect-when-you-return)) and 900 Australian dollars for an adult ([Australian Border Force](https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/duty-free)). Above it you declare the goods and pay tax and duty; in Great Britain and Australia on the whole value, not only the part above the limit. Keep the receipts.
