## How solid are these numbers?

The Hoi An side of every row is a dated price from a named tailor or leather shop that publishes it, with a link to the page it came from. The Dutch side is a published price list from a Dutch made-to-measure tailor or leather workshop, cited the same way. The weakness both sides share is that a price range for a suit spans two different garments: cloth decides most of the bill, and the bottom of a range is not the same coat as the top. That is why the saving on this page is the bottom of the Dutch range against the top of the Vietnamese one, which is the least flattering reading of every row. Ready-made leather goods are the one place where no Dutch list price could be cited at all, so those rows are stated as estimates and never lead an item.

## Before you go

- A good result needs two or three fittings spread over several days. Anything ordered on the last morning is a gamble, whatever the shop says.
- Fabric is most of the price on both sides. A suit at the bottom of a range is a different garment from one at the top, and the shops that name their cloth are the ones worth reading twice.
- Nothing here can be returned. An alteration at home costs money and eats into the saving, and a piece that does not fit is a total loss rather than a partial one.
- Hoi An has no airport: you fly to Da Nang and travel 30 km south, so the trip inside the trip is a real cost in time.
- Plain labour is not worth carrying. An alteration or a shoe repair is cheap in the Netherlands too, and the saving does not pay for the suitcase space.
